[WEEK 4] Gravity 3.1: Interim

Updated: Jan 9, 2020

Theme: Gravity

Briefing: design an artefact that express the experiential qualities of gravity

Teammates: Jason,Lili, Faye,Tonicha

Research Methods: behaviour mapping &body storming

Research

This interesting installation by Bureau Spectacular / Jimenez Lai, this rotating module was born from the idea that all surfaces — including ceilings and walls — could serve as functional space. The structure rotates once per hour, just like a clock in which every 15 minutes, one of the surfaces becomes parallel to the ground. “ The concept is derived from a comic story written and illustrated by Jimenez about a group of citizens riding a Noah’s Ark Spaceship to a new planet far away. ”

Simulated weightlessness

Since we don't know we should start with no gravity, or sense of gravity, we use something simple methods, to experience the no gravity and add extra weight to experience augmented gravity.

Brainstorming:

Gravity is a kind of power we experience on a daily basis since this word is too big, we did brainstorming to select our ideas. After brainstorming, we had an interesting idea :how gravity affect the design of everything ,take the layout of the book as example ,why lines in the book is from up to down? Also, why chairs need four legs to stand?

Initial idea:

“Our cultural forms ,from architecture to graphic design, are produced in response to our understanding of gravity and our abilities to manipulate or defy it.”Here is the line from the briefing, we concentrate on the layout and design of space.

We went to IKEA to observe the layout like how that furniture is organized and recorded behaviour mapping.

Because of the gravity, all the furniture are all floor base, we need organizers to use the upper area, imaging if there no gravity, it would be possible for you to use any part of your room.

Behavior Mapping

Next thing to do is transform those graphic inputs to a physical model, which is more easy to perceive. We recorded 3 things: their walking paths, how long they stay in per room and things they touch.

  • Walk route

Record Behavior Mapping

We decided to use lines to show routes of different people. Some of them check every room, whereas others may just choose the one they interested in to observe.

  • How long they stay& thing they touch

We use different sizes of dots to distinguish from path

  • Physical model

3D model to show behavior mapping

After this model competed, the similarities in people's behaviour become very intuitive.

Body Storminng

Our bodystorming is about the morning routine in the no gravity would, It's a pity that I forget to ask someone else record it for me.

since I thought it was so funny, Faye slept straight against the wall, since she does not need a bed to support her weight, and when she walked out her cloth will flooding, I and Jason acted like transparent people(using our human power, to achieve this no gravity hypothesis.)
