[WEEK 12] CULTURE MILE: LAUNCH MACRO UX

BRIEF: Design a way for people to discover the cultural richness of the city f London


Brief

On the first day of class, John invited people from a different company to had presentations for us, and my group is working for Culture mile and got an impressive induction about this creative company. According to the presentation, we are supposed to focus on the Kaleidoscope group and design a way to let our target group discover the cultural richness of that area.


Cultural mile send us some cases studies to us, and some researches they already have done, which made it easier to start this project. To be more specific, our target group has narrow down to Kaleidoscope group, so as the location, the culture mile area.


Kaleidoscope Creativity:


For those people, they do not consider that culture is there for them and do not spend much money and time on the art-related event.


The culture mile area:

From Farringdon to Moorgate, The City of London Corporation, together with the Barbican, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London Symphony Orchestra and the Museum of London, are bringing the area to life with imaginative collaborations and exciting events.


Field Research

Since this project is location-based, we decided to visit the area, to dig out more information or insights, walking from barbican centre to museum of London, then to the Smithfield market, experiencing the culture of that area.

Here are something we find out

  1. many visitors here do not aware of the culture mile.

  2. the way they doing the activities are quite random, there is no link between each other, lacking the identity of this area.

  3. some installations do not tell people the meaning of them, people just walked by without another glance.

  4. the area itself is too busy, full of workers

who have no time to Slow down and

savour everything they saw


Case Studies

We browsed from the website and Instagram to get to know more about the projects they have already done,

One thing arouses our interest, lots of the activities are held in the Smithfield market, we are wondering why is that, so we went this spot again.

Smithfield

There is an engrossing history of Smithfield. It is one of London’s oldest execution sites, being the execution place of Sir William Wallace in 1305. Smithfield also has other fascinating stories and urban legends about ghosts, pubs and artefacts.

After our discussion, we posted some ideas about why the Smithfield market is a popular place to hold events.

  1. Open grounds.

  2. Full of culture charm.

  3. Near barbican centre and tube station.

  4. The new London museum will take over both the General Market and Poultry Market Buildings


This trip made us realized the rich cultural deposits of there.

A number of City institutions are located in the area, such as St Bartholomew's Hospital, the Charterhouse, and Livery Halls, including those of the Butchers' and Haberdashers' Companies. Smithfield's meat market dates from the 10th century and is now London's only remaining wholesale market in continuous operation since medieval times.[3] The area also contains London's oldest surviving church, St Bartholomew-the-Great, founded in 1123 AD. Also, we inquire the staffs in order to know how this old market works in daily life and pass by, about how they understood the culture of the Smithfield.




While going through the history of Smithfield, we explored and researched different artefacts located in the area, which can strongly support our ideas. These included the first drinking water fountain, the Viaduct Tavern, the Golden boy of Pye, the Peace memorial fountain, etc. There is an interesting story about the ring of the Peace memorial statue and the origins of it.

Overall of the first week

Even this is the first week, we started our project straightaway, within this week, we already chose to focus on the Smithfield. As about next move, we gonna think about which kind of culture we want to bring people into, and how.
